I caught the tagline, "Who has time to slim slowly?" in a commercial the other day from a well-known giant in the weight loss industry and basically chalked it up to yet another way of convincing people into thinking there is a quick for weight loss.
Irksome as it is, it's how they do!
Yet it's that kind of thinking that has led most people to a place of confusion when it comes to losing weight and only serves to benefit the hotshot advertisers who perpetuate this belief through massive advertising campaigns and celebrity endorsements.
Being in the weight loss business too, the more I thought about it, I thought to myself, "Who doesn't?"
I can say from experience that I wound up way worse off after years and years of fad diets and gimmicks, not to mention the stress I put my body through in the process. The chronic low level stress I felt from living a life I really didn't want to, on top of the constant abuse and self-torture I inflicted upon myself as a result, manifested in symptoms such as binge eating, excess weight and chronic fatigue.
And no diet on the planet could fix it for me.
[bctt tweet=”Every time I did go on a diet, without realizing it, I put my body into starvation mode”], and counterintuitively slowed down my metabolism, retained fat and shut off my fat burning mechanism altogether. In the end, not only did I gain weight, but an extra 10 or 15 pounds along with it.
Oy vay!
Ironically, you would think that with all the diets out there, we would be the thinnest nation in the world, but we're not! With 72% of adult Americans overweight and 34% of kids, we are in fact the fattest nation on earth, and unless we begin to address the reason why and stop buying into fictitious ads, it's only going to escalate.
There are so many slick promos out there, especially this time of year, that want you to believe that you're overweight strictly because you eat too much, don't exercise enough and have no willpower. But weight loss goes much deeper than that. When you're not relaxed, eating too fast, too stressed, and not digesting – just for starters – you can gain weight no matter how much or how little you eat.
There's such a huge misunderstanding out there around this topic, it really bugs me these ads exist at all!
To combat it, implementing these three steps instead will free you from the shackles of food deprivation, calorie counting and punishing exercise and is relatively simple to institute into your every day life.
-
Balance your primary foods. Your primary foods include healthy relationships, a fulfilling career, spirituality (however you define it), and physical activity. So what’s that mean? If you’re in a toxic relationship, or you hate your job, you may need to leave. And if you’re not exercising, find something you like to do that gets your body moving. If it’s not two hours on the treadmill, then find something else. Just move! Your body requires it. And don’t forget your connection to Source. We all need divine guidance in our lives in some way. Hallelujah.

Kick the sugar habit. Super addicitve, sugar is actually what makes you fat, not fat! But those sneaky food manufacturers don’t want you to know it. They prefer you skip through life believing it makes you happy and gives you good juju, but it actually does the opposite by creating a constant up and down reaction in your blood sugar, resulting in irritability, crankiness, weight gain, and more cravings!
-
Go gluten- and dairy-free. I know this might seem a bit overwhelming, but for most people, it works. It may be hard at first, especially learning what foods have gluten, making most of your own meals, and switching to almond milk, but the reality is, the majority of the population are allergic to both. Plus, both cause bloating, inflammation and create digestive distress, all of which contribute to weight.
Just dropping sugar, gluten and dairy alone will result in weight loss, but don’t discount the importance of balancing your primary foods too. Emotions drive behavior, and until you figure out why you crave, overeat or binge, your weight won’t budge.
Most importantly, understanding that it took time to get where you are and that it will take time to resolve the root cause of weight is crucial. I know you want it now, but your body works on its own timeline, not yours, so be patient. It could take weeks, months, or sometimes years, but when you work with your natural rhythm and let it flow, it's lasting.
No quick fixes necessary.
