nuage de mots bulles ZOOM : ménopauseNatural hormone balancing is a hot topic, with hormonal imbalances on this rise and seemingly only getting worse, but is it worth the time and effort it takes to balance them out and get it right?

Let's first talk facts.  Mood swings, infertility, weight gain, and cystic acne are just a few of the side effects of a hormonal imbalance in your body.  And I’m not just talking about women!  Men are subject to the same hormonal imbalances that women are considering all the environmental toxins and hormone-rich foods we eat nowadays.

Hormones are lurking in the most unlikely places, including prescription drugs, factory-farmed meat, dairy, and plastics.  BPA, one of the most dangerous toxins on the market, mostly found in plastic and register receipts, actually mimics hormones in your body which completely throws your hormones off kilter.

Adrenal fatigue, a condition that taxes your adrenal glands due to excess stress, also causes hormones to go cuckoo for cocoa puffs.  Your hormones are regulated by your pituitary gland, which is part of your endocrine system – along with your adrenal glands – and when the adrenals go, so does everything else.

(You do the math!)

Another reason your hormones are off could likely be due to the pill.  If you’ve ever taken it, beware!  The pill floods your body with excess estrogen, causing yet even more imbalances amongst other serious health risks.  Plus, it can take your body up to a year to rid itself of these excess hormones and only if you balance them naturally by applying holistic protocols.

If you suspect your hormones are off and are ready to get them in check, here’s my 5-step approach:

  1. Identify the root cause of the problem and address it ASAP.  Are you too toxic?  Is your stress level too high?  Or maybe it's time to trash the pill!  The birth control pill floods your system with excess estrogen causing conditions like estrogen dominance, a hormonal imbalance.

  2. Do a detox.  Detoxing used to be considered new age and freaky but those days are long gone!  In order to successfully balance your body and stand a fighting chance against toxins, detoxing is one of my secret weapons to clean myself out and start anew, plus give my body a chance to heal and rebalance.  [bctt tweet=”Caution: Detoxing just for weight loss is a losing game.”]  Focus more on the benefits, like clearer skin, more energy and less irritability.  And keep it short, maybe 3 days to a week at most ought to do it.)

  3. Change your diet.  Get rid of packaged, processed foods, conventionally grown meats and commercially processed dairy and switch to whole, organic, straight-from-the-earth like nature intended food. Incorporating more foods like sweet potatoes, broccoli, fish, and nuts can make all the difference with your mood plus truly nourish your body.

  4. Always drink purified water and steer clear of gumming your hands up with ink from sales receipts.  The ink has BPA, a type 7 toxin used in plastics, also known as an endocrine (hormone) disrupter!

  5. Exercise, but not in a way that you find punishing.  Your mind will interpret exercise that you don’t enjoy as just more stress, creating deeper imbalances in your body.  Therefore, exercising in a way that your body truly wants and doesn’t add more stress to your already stressful life is the best plan.  Walking, Pilates or belly dancing are gentle forms of exercise that often fit the bill, and are fun!

Hormones imbalances can create utter chaos in your life, including excess weight, break ups, and breakouts that remind you of your teenage years.  Balancing them can be complicated depending on the degree of severity too, however following these simple steps will steer you in the right direction and lead to more inner peace, calm and harmony overall, which is so worth it!
