Dieting concept. Young Woman choosing between Fruits and SweetsStruggling to stop sugar cravings?  If so, you're not alone.

If sugar has you in it's seductive snare, it's likely you're prone to food frenzies, food comas and an all out war of the battle of the binge. People who crave sugar tend to associate their incessant cravings with a lot of guilt, shame and downright embarrassment, when in reality, the ones who really should be embarrassed are the food conglomerates who shove so much sugar in food nowadays, your blood sugar doesn't stand a chance.

Your blood sugar is the amount of glucose in your blood.  Its main purpose is to give your cells energy.  It's also the main source of energy for your brain; without it, it could impair mental ability.  Low blood sugar results in a condition known as hypoglycemia, and too much could result in diabetes.  A blood sugar imbalance also impacts Candida (yeast) overgrowth and ultimately leads to digestive issues as well.

I was born and raised on sugar, as are so many kids, and adults thrive on it.  I always suspected it was an issue for me.  From the time I was 17 and my doctor proclaimed me hypoglycemic, yet offered no other solution to resolving it other than to eat sugar to keep me from crashing, which only made it worse, I set out to figure out real-life strategies to help combat sugar cravings on my own, yet not feel deprived of sweet satisfaction either.

Here are my top 3:

1. Eat more protein.

This one is so overlooked and yet so simple.  Just eat protein.

Your best choice is clean, organic protein.  Eating protein will slow the absorption of carbs in your system and keep your blood sugar stable, so never eat carbs solo as it puts a great deal of stress on your body quickly and can tax your adrenal glands.

If you’re experiencing digestive issues, make sure you optimize your digestion too because you could be eating the best diet but if you’re not digesting it, it’s garbage. Complex carbs like whole grains versus simple, refined carbs are a better option.

2. Eat breakfast.

Now, I know you've heard this one before, but it's an important reminder.  Let me explain why.

One reason you may tend to not want to eat in the morning is because you’re suffering from adrenal exhaustion.  With healthy functioning adrenals, your cortisol levels are higher in the morning which contributes to a lack of appetite, but adrenal exhaustion also suppresses liver function which will in turn suppress early morning hunger.

[bctt tweet=”Adrenal exhaustion is a condition brought on by stress and affects up to 80% of Americans”], and when it comes to stopping sugar cravings, it’s crucial to eat breakfast because it sets the tone for your blood sugar for the day, which is influenced by adrenal function. Eating breakfast will replenish your stored blood sugar supply after the previous night’s energy requirements too, so you can see why this step is so critical.

3. Eat raw chocolate.

Ah, my favorite!  I’m all about not depriving myself so my next technique is to eat raw chocolate!

Raw chocolate is so good and so good for you.  It's made with all-natural sweeteners, so no need to worry about eating too much.  Natural sweeteners are less refined than refined sugar, and therefore don't create the same addictive response, plus raw chocolate nourishes your heart because of its high magnesium content which is a big plus for most Americans who are magnesium-deficient, a condition linked to diabetes, joint problems, PMS, and heart disease.

High in neurotransmitters, raw chocolate actually helps control appetite, plus it works to improve concentration, sleep, memory, and mood, and aid in hormone regulation. It has the highest food-based source of antioxidants on the planet too which fight free radicals and help your skin look younger.

Raw chocolate is truly a healthy food, so why wouldn't you eat it?!  No guilt necessary.

For many, eating sugar is like waking a sleeping giant.  It's as if you’ve awoken a beast within that seems unstoppable, but it's not impossible.  In order to stop sugar cravings, the goal is to keep your blood sugar stable at all times, which can all but guarantee to be your best defense.

With diseases like diabetes on the rise, which is estimated to nearly bankrupt the healthcare industry, it'd be a wise choice, and instituting these simple techniques will help, not to mention make a dramatic difference in the way you look, how you feel and your overall health.

In fact, you'll never look at sugar the same way again.
