Puzzled about going gluten-free? Not sure it's for you? Join the club!
Millions of men and women have heard all the buzz about going gluten-free, but don't really know what it is, why it's so important and if they should take the plunge. Let me help you figure it out with a few key tips on the topic that has everyone talking.
According to recent research, one in seven people are gluten sensitive. If you are, or you suspect that you may be, don’t let adapting to a gluten-free lifestyle overwhelm you. With any lifestyle change, it can be a challenge, but that challenge doesn’t have to be as difficult as you might think if you're prepared and fully understand the potential challenges ahead.
The first step upon finding out you're gluten sensitive is to educate yourself. Do your research on gluten sensitivity, gluten intolerance and full-blown celiac disease and understand the lifestyle and meal routines of those who eliminate gluten from their diets. Ask family members or friends too to find out if they've done it, what it's like and how well they've adapted to it.
Next, understand what foods you can and cannot eat, knowing it may take a while to fully comprehend. Gluten goes by many names and just getting to know all of them can take years. Wheat, barley and rye is just the icing on the cake. However, rest assured, you'll get the basics down in no time.
You'll likely have to clean out your kitchen cabinets of foods containing wheat, barley or rye, or in essence, gluten. But don’t throw it all away. Instead, send a few care packages to a neighbor’s or a few bags of unopened, unused food to your local food shelter.
Keep in mind that keeping a well-balanced, healthy diet doesn't mean you to have to avoid all the foods you've come to enjoy. You can still eat a tasty gluten-free meal that consists of meat, fish, rice, and most importantly, fruits and vegetables, and add gluten-free bread, cake or cookies to spice it up.
Lastly, read labels! [bctt tweet=”You can’t compromise when it comes to knowing exactly what’s in the food you’re eating.”] As more and more restaurants and grocery stores are becoming more gluten friendly, in many cases you can find a gluten-free meal selection at your favorite restaurant, and don’t be surprised to find a gluten-free section at your local grocery store either. As you understand what foods you can and cannot eat, you will soon be able to shop with ease during your next visit to the grocery store.
You may even learn about new foods that you otherwise wouldn’t have considered with your existing lifestyle and diet, which is exciting and refreshing!
As we head into the holiday season, with dinner gatherings and holiday parties looming, don’t let these time-honored events interfere with a good gluten-free diet. Offer to bring your own dish – and bring enough for everyone – because there's a good chance they won't even know it's gluten-free and love it just the same!
Keeping an eye on the foods you eat to make sure they don’t contain gluten is really pretty easy. Doing what you need to do for yourself without sabotaging yourself is another story and is actually your biggest roadblock to success. Yet, as with everything, and enough focused effort, in no time, I guarantee you'll be gluten-free and loving it!
