When it comes to staying sugar free, I am not down for depriving myself! A great way to keep the sweetness in your life without the guilt is by making a delectable treat like the one below that comes to me by way of my friend Karen Russell of Recipe 4 Wellness.
Ingredients:
- ½ cup unsweetened organic cocoa powder
- 1 ½ cups unsweetened coconut
- ¼ cup raw agave nectar or lakanto sweetener
- 1 tablespoon organic extra virgin coconut oil
- 2 tablespoons Valencia peanut butter or almond butter
- ½ teaspoon organic vanilla
- 1/8 teaspoon celtic sea salt
Directions:
Mix all ingredients in a bowl. Roll into small balls and store in refrigerator. That's it!
Chocolate coconut power balls are a great low-sugar snack for you and your kids. Enjoy a couple as a quick pick-me-up after school or midday!
Any of these ingredients can be found in your local health food store or Whole Foods Market. I've made them myself and can say from firsthand experience, they're delicious! Sugar cravings will be a total thing of the past if you continually add in more super foods and make use of alternative sweeteners that are much more gentle on your body and taste even better than refined sugar.
Plus, the best part is, with lower GI's, you naturally eat less.

Thanks, Angela! I am always searching for good lowGI dessert recipes. Can’t wait to try it! The simplest I have found so far is a low GI truffle-type chocolate treat, by mixing coconut oil, agave syrup, and cacao powder (sorry, I don’t have exact quantities…I start with the solidified coconut oil, then add cacoa powder and agave syrup alternately until it tastes good, and makes a small ball or patty. A pecan, almond, or even fig can be stuck on top of each one. Thanks again!

Get the raw organic agave instead. That is less processed and still has enzymes and minerals for your body to assimilate it well. Any other type of agave is in fact similar to HFCS.
