jumpingIf you want to increase your energy naturally, there's one thing you need to consider: stress.  Or in other words, how stressed you are!

Many times, stress occurs as result of an inability to effectively manage your emotions in relation to the people around you, including coworkers, friends, and family.  But what do you do about people you’re forced to be around or who you love but at the same time, drain your energy and leave you exhausted?

It’s a conundrum, and effects a large percentage of my client base, especially those who have a hard time saying no to someone or try to be too nice too often.  They feel a sense of obligation, and feel guilty if they do.  Most of these women are what I would classify as “nice girls.”  In other words, they overwork, overtire, and overstress themselves – to their own detriment – due to a deep-seated need to be liked or out of fear being rejected.

A lot of women who are too nice or can’t say no when they should grew up in a household where they were not accepted, and it was scary.  After all, if your own biological parents don’t accept you, who will?  At least that’s the message you get, and it’s devastating.

As a child, you’re desperate to be loved, and you’ll do anything to get it.  It’s a basic human need so it makes perfect sense to act from a place of wanting or neediness, yet as an adult, it can become an incredibly dysfunctional pattern that drives every decision you make as well as your reactions to everyday situations.

For example, you’re most likely the one to stay late at work, cover extra shifts, do your kids homework for them, cook dinner even after a full day, host the next PTA gathering.  You catch my drift.  The flip side is, people know you’ll say yes, which is why they ask, causing you to build up resentment, annoyance and frustration.

But unlikely, you'll say anything about it. (Just a guess 😉 )

People who take advantage of you do get exhausting, but it's hardly they're fault, because they’re only doing it because they know they can.  So how do you stop this speeding train of self-inflicted self-neglect, lessen the impact it’s having on your stress levels, your health and body, and ultimately find ways to increase your energy?

Here are my top 3 tips:

1.       Learn to say no!

Ok, maybe this one was obvious, and I know this can be uncomfortable, especially if you’re not used to it.  You’re worried what people will think, what they’ll say, if you’ll hurt their feelings, etc., etc., etc.  STOP!  None of that is any of your business.  Learning to say no is an excellent first step toward setting appropriate boundaries in your life and developing a closer, more intimate relationship with yourself, one you are most likely least familiar with.

If it is uncomfortable at first, just sit with the discomfort.  I promise it won’t kill you and you’ll thank yourself when you have more free time – and more energy – to indulge in something you’d rather be doing later on.

2.      Change your diet.

Easier said than done, right?  Noted, and yet, eating foods that support your physiology has a tremendous impact on your outlook on life and how well you manage your day-to-day affairs.

Eating for emotional reasons, cravings for certain foods, eating too fast, binge eating or overeating are all reactionary behaviors and can be linked to high stress and a need for control.  When you feel powerless over your life, you seek control in whatever way you can get it, and if you’re a people pleaser, like so many women are, you’re unlikely to find it in your relationships, hence it shows up in how and why you eat.

Filling the nutritional gaps left by junk foods or nutritionally dense foods like GMO’s goes a long way in creating a sensation of fullness, giving you ammo against sometimes fictional hunger pangs and supplying your body with energy that truly lasts all day.  The key here is to eat organic, whole foods as often as possible.

3.      End toxic relationships.

Some people are never going to get it, and that includes your workplace, in which case, it just may be time to go.  Relationships, including jobs, run their course, and have a natural start stop cycle.  Some last a lifetime, some not so long.  And if the relationship with the job, or person, isn't supportive, then it can’t last.  Period.

Your partner, friend, boss, or family member may try to keep you stuck in your old patterns by pitching a fit when you say no or refuse to engage in your old behavior, but don’t let that fool you.  That’s their dysfunction, not yours, and one you cannot afford to tolerate any longer.

It’s up to you to make sure you weed out people or places who are trying to get from you versus those who genuinely have your best interest at heart.  No relationship should be one-sided, where you’re constantly overdoing and the other not doing at all, including your relationship with yourself.  Your body needs and requires you to take care of it, not neglect it, and when your energy is low, it’s a surefire sign of your own neglect.

Let the people around you accept responsibility for themselves, as you do too, and the natural ebb and flow of how things should be can happen organically, which includes getting all the energy you want, all day every day!
