doctorIncreasingly, people tell me over and over that they’re too afraid to tell their doctor no, to surgery, medication or their suggestions in general, so they just comply in order to avoid confrontation or criticism.

I find it especially true for people who want to try holistic modalities of treatment, especially for diseases like cancer or something else just as severe.  Be it fear of bucking mainstream medicine in favor of another option that’s considered inconclusive due to lack of scientific evidence, or low self-esteem about yourself which fails to afford you the confidence to simply speak up for yourself, either way, questioning your doctor without retribution is a birthright of every individual.

Lines can be crossed when there’s a personal relationship at stake, as in, your doctor is your friend outside the office, which can create discord in your circle of friends or family if you disagree with their advice, yet for your own sake, it’s a risk worth taking.

Doctors are people, just like you and me, and they’re no more magical or fantastical than we are.  We’re all human and we’re all imperfect, meaning they are not always right no matter how much education they have or where they got it.  [bctt tweet=”One of the biggest problems with healthcare is that you’re not led to trust yourself”] or what you think you should do to stay well over what anyone else thinks or says, especially your doctor.

There’s an illogical belief in this world that unless you’ve spent years in medical training, you couldn’t possibly know what to do when you get sick, which is simply NOT TRUE!

Trying to please your doctor or any other practitioner – conventional or otherwise – is a remedy for disaster.  What good does it do to try to make someone else happy when it comes to your health just because you’re afraid of what they’ll say if you want to try something new that might actually work?

I’ve worked with clients who’ve had the same symptoms for years, who keep going back to the same person, who keeps telling them it’s normal or there’s nothing they can do about it, so instead of doing something else, they do nothing – because they’re worried what they'll say if they do!

My best advice?  Get over it.  You don’t live forever, and depending on what you’re dealing with, you might not live long if you don’t dare take a chance and forget about what someone else thinks.  There are thousands of ways to treat yourself, and they don’t all require the insides of a hospital or popping pills, but there’s no one who can take control of your health better than you can unless you’re too scared to step outside of the traditional medical model and trust your own judgment.

The next time you’re confronted with what your doctor says over listening to your instinct, think twice, because if your gut is trying to tell you something, it’s never wrong.

The best part is it won’t get mad at you if you don’t listen to it either.
