The Department of Surgery suggests that the reason gastric bypass is the most common form of weight loss surgery in the US is because it results in “reliable weight loss with acceptable risks and minimal side effects.”
Tell that to the women I’ve talked to who’ve tried it, and gained all their weight back, which is many times the reality for millions of people. Yet if it’s so reliable, why? Not only did it fail at fulfilling its primary purpose of weight loss, but it caused undue risk just by the very fact that it’s surgery!
Plus the cost! [bctt tweet=”Gastric bypass surgery typically costs $20,000-$25,000 with $22,000 being the national average”] according to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases.
The procedure itself consists of stapling off a large section of the stomach, leaving a tiny pouch, greatly reducing its capacity to hold food. Conceptually, you’ll automatically lose weight because you'll be less hungry. Additionally, because most of the stomach and some of the small intestine have been bypassed, some of the nutrients and calories in your food will not be absorbed.
Isn’t the point of eating to nourish you? So what happens when you’re malnourished, as is the case with gastric bypass patients?
In short, a lot. First, anytime surgery is involved, it should be the absolute last resort, especially when it comes to weight loss. Being overweight is unhealthy, but rarely life-threatening to the degree surgery is required, and unless you’ve already addressed any underlying eating issues, including and especially emotional, shouldn’t even be considered.
Second, the reason why so many people gain their weight back after undergoing gastric bypass is because they bypassed the real heart of the matter to begin with, which is emotional eating! Just like with any diet, you will never have permanent, long term success by simply masking the problem with a quick fix. You may not even realize it, or want to, but overeating is rooted in a strong desire to maintain or obtain a feeling, even if it means being overweight. Emotional eaters have a survival mechanism that kicks in when confronted with certain feelings, or emotions, and in order to survive, your brain reverts to a belief system that tells you dairy will save you, or bread, or potato chips.
Aside from the physiological reasons you overeat such as adrenal fatigue or poor gut function, emotional eating is the #1 cause of obesity!
If your body is absorbing less nutrients, how can it possibly function properly? FYI: It can’t! Poor absorption leads to thyroid disorders, low energy, poor cognitive ability, and just about poor everything else. It’s not a small thing to deprive your body of much-needed nutrition, which is exactly what gastric bypass does, requiring heavy supplementation for the rest of your life.
Not to mention the complications. Digestive problems top the list, along with ulcers and bleeding, and in extreme cases, even heart attack and blood clots!
When there are risk-free options, why would you risk it all?
Lastly, the success rate with gastric bypass is sketchy at best. Success is determined by a minimum of 50% weight loss of the amount of weight you’re overweight maintained for a minimum of at least 5 years afterward. However, there’s little to no documentation to prove how many people actually fall into this category, or for how long. Double blind studies can consist of 1-100 people or more, so stats are not always accurate. Unless you know someone personally who’s had success with it, don’t just assume it’s successful.
There are many options when it comes to losing weight. Just flip your tv on or open a magazine and you’ll be bombarded with them. But something as costly and invasive as surgery demands a thorough review of how it will benefit you, if it’s worth going under the knife for, and if you can circumvent the need for it altogether by managing your symptoms another way.
You can go the whole nine, and wind up where you are now or worse, even more overweight, out a huge chunk of money, and still an emotional eater. My advice is, don't fall for the con, or at the very least, invest in gastric bypass after you’ve recovered from emotional eating.
But then, you wouldn’t even need it anymore anyways!
