RespectWhen it comes to the sexes, there are a few fundamental differences that define us, one specific difference being the issue of respect.  While it’s true that both men and women want and deserve respect, women more commonly complain about lack of respect than men.

Why?

For women, feeling respected is a big part of our self-confidence, and that includes self-respect too.  With certain parts of the world not even acknowledging women as equals, we all feel it.  It’s part of the collective consciousness whether we realize it or not.

And when we don’t get the respect we feel we should, we feel that too.

There’s no denying it when you’ve been disrespected.  From a sideway glance, to a condescending tone, to an insult to your intelligence.  It happens every day in a lot of different ways, to many different people of all different races and sexes.

But that doesn’t mean it should be accepted.

You can’t help what people do or say, which is a given that if you have yet to come to terms with, you should make a priority!  But disrespect for the most part starts with one person and one person only, that person being you.

People respect people who respect themselves, whether you’re a woman or a man.  They may not agree with everything you say or do, but that doesn’t mean you can’t earn someone’s respect regardless of your political beliefs, religious beliefs, or any other belief for that matter.

In other words, you can still agree to disagree but still respect someone too.

What it all comes down to is you, and what you believe about yourself.  If you don’t believe you deserve respect, you won’t get it.  What’s worse is, people know when you lack self-respect.  It’s as obvious as the color of your skin.  People sense it, and unfortunately, some take advantage of it.

Where I find lack of respect shows up the strongest is in the workplace, intimate relationships, service industries, and social classes, and while you could legitimately argue it exists just about everywhere, it seems to be more apparent when you’re a subordinate, providing a service such as a server in a restaurant or a stylist in a salon, if you’re the “weaker” sex, or have less money.

I don’t think anyone, of any stature, is better than anyone for any reason, regardless of education, income, race or age.  I don’t even think people are better than animals and have any right to disrespect any creature, ever.

One thing I'm sure we can all agree on is, there is only one greater being, and it’s no human on earth.

Many women who grow up with less than idealized images of how women should be treated, what their worth is, and what they’re capable of never seem to believe much else, and therefore repeatedly attract circumstances that only reinforce their inferior beliefs about themselves, winding up in low paying jobs, answering to curt and demanding bosses, working overtime for no extra pay, or accepting abuse in relationships, both at home and at work.

Sadly, they’re too afraid to stick up for themselves to expect anything more either.

[bctt tweet=”It’s no one’s job however to prove your worth to you,”] because if it was going to happen, it would've by now. Therefore, it's your job, and up to you to overcome any self-limiting beliefs you have that neglect to prove to yourself every single day how valuable you are, just by being alive.

People learn by example, just like kids, and if your actions are rooted in "it's ok to walk all over me," what do you think they're going to do?

Call it human nature, call it fate, or call it what it really is, which is a poorly developed image of one's self, and until you learn to put yourself first, and respect yourself too, no one else will.

In truth, you can't hardly blame them.
