Pretty woman doing exercises in the parkOut of all the workouts I do, I have to say, Pilates has by far become one of my favorites.

Years ago, I couldn’t figure out what the hype was all about.  Sure it did wonders for my abs, but what I couldn’t stand about it was how stationary it was, or should I say low impact?  I liked high energy, fast-moving workouts, and Pilates bored me, so I only dabbled in it and quickly dropped it.

Oh how I’ve changed!

Life was different for me then, hence who I was was different too.  I could only really relate to more fast-paced, frenetic exercise which ironically was the pace of my life at the time too.  Now, more relaxation and downtime is my thing, and Pilates complements it perfectly.

No more pushing myself to the brink of collapse every day!  Or overworking myself into a tizzy.  Gone are the days when eating on-the-go was just par for the course along with driving with my knee so as to have both hands free for food and to use my cell.

(Yes, I really did that!!!)

Here’s what I love about Pilates.

Pilates exercise is developed around control. Your abs or gut are your powerhouse, or control center, which is where you store emotions.  A lot of emotions, ones like fear, rejection, anger, guilt, and shame.  Those specific emotions that are the top drivers for emotional eaters.

[bctt tweet=”Many emotional eaters carry extra weight in their midsection,”] because it’s where they tend to be the weakest – emotionally.  Interestingly, this is the part of your body Pilates helps strengthen the most – physically!

Therefore, strengthening your powerhouse does a whole lot more for you than just giving you great abs.  It positively impacts your stress response which positively impacts your ability to effectively manage your emotions and ultimately deters emotional eating.  So not only do you get a great workout but it works out your mind too.

Pilates constantly challenges your powerhouse, stretching and lengthening your legs, arms, and torso, making you feel longer and taller too, which is very empowering and leads to increased confidence and self-esteem.

Pilates always focuses on strengthening the weakest muscles.  No part of your body is ignored when you’re practicing Pilates.  Proper form makes all the difference!

A good Pilates workout can be accomplished in as little as 25-30 minutes a day.  I do it at home a few times a week with my Mari Winsor DVD!  You catch on quickly.  None of the exercises are particular complicated and even remind me of things I just did naturally as a kid, like “Rolling Like A Ball!”

Pilates is a really fun way to get in shape and stay in shape and not overdo it.  It promotes exercise that encourages smooth, even breathing, balance, fluidity, and self-control, which is a key component to overcoming emotional eating, not necessarily with food but more so your feelings.

For variety, I add weights and cardio throughout the week too, but there’s no doubt Pilates is making a big difference in how I look and feel, and gives me the inner fortitude that I never had before to be brave enough to be me, confident and free!
