gmO-tomatoSince the government enacted the Monsanto Protection Act, your digestion is at more risk than ever.

Monsanto is the largest biotech company in the world, responsible for genetically modifying corn, canola, cottonseed, and soy.   They’ve also added beet sugar to the list and are working their way up to wheat, thereby encompassing nearly 100% of manufactured foods.

Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are made by forcing genes from one species, such as bacteria, viruses, animals, or humans, into the DNA of a food crop or animal in order to introduce a new trait.*

According to The American Academy of Environmental Medicine, “Several animal studies indicate serious health risks associated with GM food,” including infertility, immune problems, accelerated aging, faulty insulin regulation, and changes in major organs and the gastrointestinal system.”

Why?  When your food is genetically modified, your body doesn’t recognize it as food anymore and has no idea what to do with it.  Even worse, it can’t even break it down, leaving rotting, undigested food in your gut, leading to conditions such as leaky gut, malnutrition, inflammation, even autoimmune disorders.

Toxic substances such as GMO’s wreak havoc on the immune system, autonomic nervous system, and endocrine system, interfere with your ability to think clearly, sleep well, and cause skin disorders, reproductive issues, and cancer.

Unfortunately, you don’t have the people making the decisions about GMO’s on your side, so it’s up to you to do something about it.

Aside from reading labels looking for non-GMO or organic certification, and eliminating the offending foods altogether, optimizing your digestion is imperative.  Your gut is responsible for 80% of your health, and should not be taken lightly.  [bctt tweet=”When your gut’s down, your brain’s down, and all systems are off kilter.”]

Your body is in a never-ending cycle to maintain homeostasis, or internal balance, and helping the process along would behoove you when it comes to lasting energy, vitality, and longevity.

A simple solution are enzymes.  I’m not talking about over-the-counter, GNC enzymes either.  As with medication, there are different strengths.  That which you buy at CVS or Walgreens is of a lesser strength than that which you get at the pharmacy, hence the same analogy applies to enzymes.

First, it’s important to get plant-based digestive enzymes only because unless you do, they won’t work in all phases of digestion.  In other words, animal enzymes won’t work in the stronger pH of your pancreas, so it’s critical to follow this one rule.

You also want to make sure that the enzymes you’re using target various bodily symptoms too.  For example, if you have a pain in your right arm, and you’ve been unable to resolve it any other way, it’s possibly linked to poor fat digestion due to an imbalance in your gallbladder.

Or, if you’re experiencing a leg or muscle cramp, it could be a result of a calcium deficiency due to poor protein digestion.

Or, high triglycerides are indicative of a high sugar and refined carb diet that can’t be properly digested either.

The list goes on.

Another important factor in deciding on enzymes is to consider whether or not they are pH balanced so that they deliver the right proportion of enzymes in the exact amount needed.

Without adequate digestion, the body struggles to get nutrition out to the most vital organs so your body can operate efficiently, but when your food is cooked or irradiated, you hit 40, you’re under too much stress, eat too fast, or take prescription medications, your body becomes deficient in enzymes and homeostasis is challenged.

The most common symptoms we see as a result of enzyme deficiency include:

Changes in enzyme supplementation can make an astounding difference in how well you sleep, what you eat, weight, moods, the impact stress has on your body, and more!  You definitely don't want to ignore this aspect of your health; if you have symptoms, my best suggestion is to address it ASAP.
