maskAs I sit here today, reflecting back on the last six years of my life, I’m in awe of how far I’ve come.

All those years in corporate really took a toll on me.  Waking up every day, dreading my day, wondering if things would ever change.  It was a soulless existence that left me lost, without direction, and often times asking, “What am I supposed to be doing?” and, “Is this what’s best for me?”

But still, I stayed, not knowing what else to do.

Whenever a coworker would call me a “lifer,” I’d nearly clock them.  I knew I didn’t want to be there for life.  I’d rather die than put myself through a lifetime of misery, feeling as empty as I did inside.

I remember back in college when friends knew exactly what they wanted to do with their lives.  It shocked me, because I had no clue.  All I could do was what came naturally to me.  But was that it?

It certainly didn’t seem like it, no matter how right it felt, so I got a job instead, falling into the traditional work role so many people find themselves in.  One filled with no hope, or possibility, completely ignoring my creative side, which had no outlet or means of escape.

Sure enough, that caught up with me.  For the direction for my life was right in front of me all along.  It wasn’t that it wasn’t there, it was that I was blind to it, and not being the common road to success, it seemed insignificant and useless.

I could just hear my parent’s voice in my head.  “Four years of college – for this?”

Following my heart’s desire wasn’t something I was groomed to do.  The safe route was the safe route.  Right?  It wasn’t until much later that I realized their definition of safety and mine were totally and completely different.  But assuming everyone else knew best, I listened to everyone else's advice all those yearsr and ignored my own.

Which led to a life of constant overeating, unhappiness and daydreaming all day about a life that I could only dream of.

(Hint: Daydreaming all day is your first clue that you’re meant for so much more!)

It took a lot to get me to wake up to my true purpose, and then to actually go for it.  I was in my comfort zone all those years, having built a multiple six-figure career, well-respected and highly sought after in the insurance industry.  Why leave?

It finally dawned on me why.  You only get one shot, and the clock was ticking.  My shot was almost half over.  It was time to go for it.

I’ve learned that sometimes in life, you have to take chances, despite the risk or how scary it seems.  And, taking chances does not mean everything will be easy, as much as you want it to be.  If you’re looking for easy, then keep doing what you're doing, because it'll be easy alright albeit boring!

The only thing is, I'm guessing you want more.  I know it, because I know you.  I meet people like you all the time.  Turns out just enough isn’t enough anymore, and you’re finally willing to do whatever it takes to get it.

And like me, you’ve only got one shot too, and accepting less than everything you want out of life just isn’t good enough.  It’s do or die time, else your life will rot away with a whole host of desires unfulfilled and unmet.

And that’s not ok.

I never wanted my legacy to be one that isn’t tied to who I really am, and adjusting claims on wind-damaged roofs or burned out houses like I used to do all day isn’t me.  It’s who I pretended to be.

Let’s just say I can fake it when I have to, but I found out, you can only fake it for so long!

If you’re questioning where you are, lack direction or feel unfulfilled, you’re where I was.  I can tell you from experience, it’s not just going to change on its own either.  You have to be the one to make it change.

In other words, you have to take action.

[bctt tweet=”There is nothing or no one holding you back but you.”] You simply have to decide what it is you want.  You don’t have to know how.  You don’t even have to know why, you just have to do it and trust the rest will take care of itself.

Your authenticity is at a premium.  Sharing your natural-born gifts and true nature is what people want.  It’s what you want too, you’ve just never had a platform to be you.

Now is the time to take that chance.  It’s time to be you.  As the saying goes, feel the fear and do it anyways!  There’s never been a better time to unleash the truth of who you are and discover where it takes you, which undoubtedly will be straight to the heart of your life's purpose and passion.

You’ll find your direction, your true north, and you'll see, as did I, that it’s the greatest gift you can give people, not to mention yourself.

PS: I never miss climbing roofs or stomping around in fire debris.  In fact, I've never once regretted my decision, no matter how risky it was.  I had to start over at some point in life so that my life started moving in the right direction.  I actually feel it was riskier to never risk it to begin with and only wish I'd done it sooner! 🙂
