likeIf there’s one thing people want as a result of weight loss it’s confidence.  In fact, it’s the reason they want to lose weight in the first place!  To look good, feel good and feel confident.

But can you be confident anyways?  And what happens when you lose weight – and you’re still not confident?  It’s the age old question: Are you confident in who you are because you lost weight or are you just outright confident?

Confidence comes from within, and isn’t always dependent on how you look.  Confidence is a feeling not physical.  Think about it.  There are plenty of overweight women who are confident.  (Think Oprah Winfrey.)  That alone forces you to question your reasons for wanting to lose weight.

Perhaps you think it will earn you a promotion.  Looks matter, right?  Or maybe you’ll meet the love of your dreams, because surely he wouldn’t date anyone overweight.  But that’s not necessarily so when you can count one example to the contrary.

Which I’m sure you can.

I’ve come to realize though that unfortunately, many young girls and women are not groomed to be confident.  Instead, they’re told to be seen and not heard, or how ladies act, which isn’t always in alignment with acting confidently or assertively.

Therein lies the rue. [bctt tweet=”Losing weight is so much more about psychology than calories in calories out.”] It's about how you view food, think about food, think about yourself, and how well your physiology works.

And has nothing to do with counting points!

Sure, diets provide a temporary fix to a much bigger, underlying issue, and when you’re desperate, it comes in handy, but just like when you overeat, when you gain the weight back, you feel guilty and wonder why you don’t have enough willpower.

I guarantee if willpower was all it took, you would’ve lost weight a long time ago and never gained it back again!

There is a certain kind of energy that comes with confidence that can translate into thinness.  It’s how you move and interact with your body that makes the difference.  Just walking a certain way can boost your pride and up level your “it” factor.  For some though, it can be daunting to get a lot of attention, while others thrive on it.  But if you never address the real reason behind your weight, you’ll be a yoyo dieter forever.

Having confidence in yourself is a belief system you’re born with, yet although innate, kids so often are stripped of their inborn naiveté that it costs them their natural born confidence, especially kids who are victims of abuse.

If you’ve been verbally, physically or sexually abused in any way, it’s likely your belief is you’re not good enough, and no amount of dieting will ever fix it.  People with low self-esteem tend to abuse something, as in food, because the behavior itself constantly reinforces their core beliefs about themselves which show up as self-loathing, self-abandonment and overweight.

When you’re confident in yourself first, weight stops being an issue, and you just might actually forget about it.  And as with anything, once you no longer pay attention to it, it goes away on its own, and you become naturally thin naturally like you were always meant to be.
