Let me just start out by saying that if you do look your age, that’s totally ok! But the general consensus with most women is, they don’t want to. If that's you, keep reading!
For me, aging has been interesting – to say the least. Weird things have started happening that I previously thought I was immune to. When people said, “When you’re in your 40’s,…,” I thought, won’t happen to me!
Doik! Was I wrong.
I have circulatory issues that, while easy to live with, are annoying. No matter how many kegels I do, I still pee when I laugh or shout. And I never even had kids! I have little patience for ignorance, and my skin developed a mild case of rosacea that’s replaced the break outs of my younger years.
But despite all that, I must be doing something right, because everywhere I go, people are shocked to learn my real age.
Most times, people mistake me for an average age of 32, when in reality, at the time of this writing, I’m 48. What’s my secret? Many.
By choice, I chose not to marry or have kids. I have known since I was a kid that I never wanted kids, and I pretty much knew marriage wasn’t my thing either. Certainly I’ve dated, and even fallen in love, but it wasn’t meant to be, and with enough siblings to satisfy my parent’s need for grandkids – and now, even great grandkids – I’m off the hook!
I also don’t smoke (never have) and rarely drink. I’ve definitely had my share of drunken stupors, as early as my teens, to college, to my late 30’s, but needless to say, those days are over. I can barely stay up past midnight let alone stay out all night on a drunken binge fest!
I left corporate seven years ago and counting. My job was beyond stressful, plus it offered me no chance at expressing my creativity, and was as exciting as watching paint dry. I was in insurance, which has served me very well throughout my life, especially recently in light of a car accident I was in last February, yet no amount of contractor negotiations or climbing ladders could keep me engaged for the long haul.
I did it because it was a job. That’s it. And it was a great job, but my desire to do something meaningful with my life ultimately won out, and caused me to walk away from a multiple six-figure, 15-year career when the economy was completely tanking and I had no idea what I was even doing!
I had never owned or operated a business by myself before, so I was clueless. What I did know was that I needed help. So I got it, by hiring coaches, mentors, muses. Whatever you want to call them. And they all helped me figure it out. I still don’t know everything, but I know some things, even if it’s just enough to get by sometimes.
Most importantly, I’m happy. I never really was before, or at least before now, now meaning before I started my business. I was really just going through the motions not knowing there was so much more out there for me. It took some pretty serious, and even scary, almost deadly life-changing events to turn my life around.
At the time, you couldn’t have convinced me it was all for my greater good, or would somehow lead me down the path of my life’s purpose, but now, in retrospect, it’s easy to see, and I’m actually even grateful for them.
I’m also extremely knowledgeable in the field of natural health, and I live it every day, which in all reality, I think is my biggest secret. I detox regularly, I take enzymes religiously, I keep my stress to a minimum, and I work out, which often varies, from just plain walking to aerobics to dancing or whatever I’m in the mood for!
In esssece, I fully embody a holistic lifestyle, from what I eat to how I think to my beliefs on modern-day healthcare and medicine. But not in an over-the-top orthorexia kind of way. That’s not only freaky but a total turn off. Instead, I do it in a healthy, in total control of my health kind of way, by trusting my own intuitive understanding of truth combined with complete confidence in my ability to heal myself more times than not.
I used to give all my power away too, to everyone around me, including doctors, teachers, family and friends, because I didn’t trust myself first and sourced it from fear, anxiety, doubt, and worry instead. I have since found that [bctt tweet=”fear is a false god strictly intent on wreaking havoc in your life”], and is far from the trustworthy friend I came to rely on for so long.
Through it all, I developed a faith I never before realized. One I never knew existed but in so many ways has been my salvation.
Do I love the compliments about my age? Of course! Who wouldn’t??! Yet at the same time, I’m perfectly ok with, and accepting of, my real age. It’s true with age comes wisdom, and there’s so much more yet to come, which I’m fully ready for because I’m a diehard learner as it is.
I never stop learning and educating myself, especially if it’s something that interests me, because as they say, knowledge is power, which has been a life lesson in and of itself. Once I stopped catering to defunct emotions that sent me down wayward paths and threw my life into a tailspin more times than not, I established a stronghold I’d never known before, and realized that living my life from a fear-based reality was a farce.
One I’ve since sold down the river long ago.
It’s what’s inside me that people see on the outside, regardless of how well I take care of myself, or what kind of moisturizer I use at night. Sure, it helps, but not as much as what’s going on inside every day, how well I manage my emotions, and the peace and calm I feel from the life choices I make and from the one true God that never fails me or deserts me.
A mentor of mine taught me that God works through faith not fear, and although it took some time to get it, I never question it anymore especially if I feel uncertain or afraid. All I do is go to truth, which is that God wants everything for me that I want, that the laws of the universe are infallible if you understand them and believe in them, and that fear is a bygone energy whose time has come to pass.
If you can get to that place too, who knows, maybe you’ll look 16 years younger too!
