When it comes to weight loss, there are many different theories on what works best, one being the relativity of BMI.
BMI stands for body mass index, and it’s a measure of body fat based on the weight and height of adult men and women. The real question though is, does it matter when it comes to losing weight?
Obviously, the lower your BMI, the less you weigh, and the healthier you are. Doctors measure it, personal trainers live by it, and it’s an excellent way of knowing your progress as far as numbers go.
But it can’t be relied on solely when it comes to weight loss.
Weight is a complex issue, one that involves a lot of little pieces that can’t so easily be measured and accounted for, such as how your weight makes you feel, how you’d feel if you lost it, or why it’s there in the first place.
It might sound counterintuitive, but fat is highly protective for millions of people, so although you want to lose it consciously, subconsciously, your mind might be stopping you. Think of it like this. As a child, you were scared. Perhaps you grew up in a violent household, or you were cruelly teased a lot, or even abused. Food became your salvation, and you learned to eat to mask the pain. Pile more pain on top of more pain, and you become overweight from all the overeating.
But the reason you overeat is never resolved, so many years later, as an adult, you’re still overeating every time you feel the same kind of pain you did when you were a kid, whether it’s the same old pain, or new pain.
In that case, BMI doesn’t amount to a hill of beans.
Then there’s the importance of gut health. How toxic are you? Are you OD’ing on sugar every day? Do you have a candida overgrowth? All of these factors play a huge part with weight, which BMI fails takes into consideration.
The biggest problem with modern day approaches to weight loss is that it’s too one-sided and neglects to take into account the real issues underlying excess weight, the most important one being stress. Stress drives everything, from disease to low energy to weight, and not all stress looks alike.
You may be suffering from emotional stress, like a job loss or loss of a loved one, or physical stress, such as a pinched nerve or back problems. You may even have nutritional stressors, in the form of enzyme or vitamin deficiencies.
Without ever correcting any of these issues, you’ll constantly struggle with your weight and wonder why it never goes away.
BMI does little to help you get control of a lifestyle that’s driven by stress and never changes.
Without question, diet, exercise and BMI are important when it comes to weight loss, and shouldn’t be ignored. But to rely on them solely will only set you up for failure and guarantee that you’ll gain weight again, making it even harder to lose the next time around, not to mention the emotional impact of weight, which can be devastating in and of itself.
[bctt tweet=”Weight loss comes down to what you’re eating and how stressed you are,”] regardless of anything else, despite your age, despite genetics, despite all of it! Once you master emotional eating and redefine your life to align with your true inner self plus eliminate as muh stress as possible, you'll never have to think about your weight or how to lose it again!
