Being overweight can be confusing, especially if you’re someone who works out and eats right. Believe it or not, even if you’re doing everything you think you’re supposed to be doing, you might not be doing enough, which will cause weight to creep up or not budge.
If you’re trying to reach a certain goal, you have to look at all the angles to getting there, and there are some you might be overlooking. Here are the top six I’ve come up with, which may explain why you’re still overweight:
-
Resolving to never eat (x,y,z). [bctt tweet=”Deprivation is the enemy. It literally sets you up to fail.”] Anything you want badly enough, you’ll obsess about, so it’s better to just get it out of your system. The key here is not overindulging. A little goes a long way when it comes to satisfying a craving. Besides, you can’t stop chocolate from being delicious! Have a square of dark a day, or if ice cream is more your thing, choose a dairy-free version, preferably one that is portion-controlled like a frozen fruit bar instead.
-
Eating too little. It sounds contrary, but most people trying to lose weight cut back on calories, and sometimes go too far. The concept of deprivation applies here too. If you think “being good” all day works, it will catch up with you, and you’ll be ravenous by dinnertime – and you just might overeat! Instead, eat a filling breakfast, and a filling lunch, which will give you sustainable all-day energy plus prevent overeating.
-
Eating too much “healthy” food. Even though it’s gluten-free, dairy-free, organic, naturally sweetened, or whatever else the label says, turn it over anyways! You always want as few ingredients as possible, and ones you can easily pronounce, but when it comes to nutritional content, 4 grams of sugar or less per serving and unsaturated fats are best. Tip: Avoid too many fried foods! A whole bag of chips is still a whole bag of chips, even if they’re fried in olive oil.
-
Multitasking. When you’re not paying attention to how much you’re eating, you’re overeating! Which means more weight. Take a break, breathe, be thankful, and focus on your food. When you do, the taste, texture and aroma come alive, making you feel fuller longer!
-
Speaking of breathing, breathe. If you’re too stressed out, anything you eat will be a wash. Your mind has to register that you just ate, otherwise you’ll be hungry again soon after. Sit with your feet on the floor, back against the chair, and take three deep breaths. This simple step sends a signal to your brain that the coast is clear, there’s no danger, and allows your body to digest better, which helps with weight loss.
- Adrenal exhaustion. Nothing drives weight more than stress, and if you’re in adrenal exhaustion, good luck getting the weight off until you fix it first. Adrenals rely on healthy hormone function, however too much stress deregulates how well your hormones uptake thereby interfering with how well your thyroid and adrenals function, causing sugar cravings, more weight and even depression. If you do nothing else, see a qualified natural health professional who can help heal your adrenals.
If you’re actively attempting to lose weight, don’t disregard what’s right in front of you that might be making it impossible. You’ll only wind up frustrated and likely give up. Incorporating these six steps though will make it a lot easier, and propel you out of your rut and on your way to losing all the weight you want!
