how to have a healthy thyroidThere’s a lot of talk about thyroid disorders, thyroid diseases, cancer, autoimmune conditions, and a lot more related to your thyroid out there right now, but who’s talking about thyroid health?

Things get very complicated in the world of healthcare, as if your body is too complicated to understand. Research goes on in search of a cure for whatever ails you, when the answers are really right in front of you.

Can everything be solved with a flash of a wand?  Maybe not, but it’s not as difficult to overcome illness and disease and become healthy again as people may think.  When it comes to your thyroid, when something goes wrong, the solution always seems to be to rip it out, as if it had no intended purpose in the first place.

Think again!

The thyroid is part of the endocrine system.  Located at the base of the neck, it’s a butterfly-shaped gland that regulates body temperature, metabolism and is responsible for the function of every cell in your body.

(It should be clear already why you need it, but if not keep reading!)

Your thyroid takes iodine and uses it to convert thyroxine (T4) to triodothyronine (T3), which allows the whole metabolic process to take place.  Without it, you’re sluggish, your hair falls out, you gain weight, you’re cold all the time, you’re depressed, you sleep a lot, can’t think straight.

Additionally, low thyroid hormone can lead to altered levels of serotonin and GABA which regulate mood, energy and appetite, which makes it even more important to make sure it's functioning right because who wants to be cranky, fat and tired?!

You need your thyroid, which is why it’s so important to do whatever you can to fix it if it’s not working right before taking any extreme measures, like removing it.

Here are 5 easy ways you can fix your thyroid naturally right now:

  1. Eliminate artificial sweeteners.  You know, the little pink packet that promises sweetness and weight loss in one?  In reality, artificial sweeteners are neurotoxins and actually change your brain chemistry so that you crave more food (and sugar), not less.  But not only that, aspartame, a very common one, changes the ratio of amino acids in the blood, blocking or lowering the uptake of not just hormones like serotonin and dopamine, but also the amino acid tyrosine, which combines with iodine to make T4 and T3, the hormones needed for proper thyroid function.

  2. Eat organic food only.  Now, I get this can be a hardship for some people, however, it will save you doctor bills and surgeries in the long run.  It’s true food is medicine.  It will make you sick or make you healthy.  Pesticides found on conventionally grown food contain chemicals that are considered to be endocrine disrupters which when absorbed into your body either mimic or block hormones and disrupt normal bodily functions, including thyroid performance.  Known endocrine disrupters include DDT, PCBs, dioxin, and the drug DES.  Some are carcinogenic too and cause thyroid tumors as well.

  3. Eliminate “fake” fat.  A low-fat or no-fat diet or one high in the wrong kind of fat weakens immunity and results in hormonal imbalances, which will effect thyroid.  Fake fat like hydrogenated and trans do your body no good, but not all fat is bad.  You need fat for energy, maintaining cell integrity and hormone production and regulation.  Good fats include olive oil, fish, and nut and seed oils, which also contain a healthy supply of Vitamins A and D, also necessary for healthy hormones and to support endocrine function.  To the contrary, [bctt tweet=”low Vitamin D is associated with thyroiditis, which is an inflammatory condition of the thyroid.”]

  4. Reduce processed and packaged foods.  I know they’re convenient, but they’re also killing you!  Packaged and processed foods contain poor quality fats and high levels of iodized salt, which contributes to thyroid dysfunction and imbalances.  Use sea salt instead which has over 80 trace minerals, all of which your thyroid and other glands need.

  5. Eat more sea foods.  Foods from the ocean like seaweed not only have a lot of iodine naturally, but they’re highly detoxifying and have the ability to remove radioactive and heavy metal pollutants from your body.  Avoid predatory fish like shark, king mackerel, tuna, marlin, or swordfish which contain high levels of mercury which contributes to hyperthyroidism.

There’s so much more you can do to keep your thyroid functioning well, but these tips are a good place to start.  Remember, a diagnosis is not a death sentence, and if you’re someone who takes an active role in your own health, you have an even better chance of regaining full function of your thyroid or any other body part and keeping your whole body intact for life.
