{"id":11787,"date":"2016-03-02T21:53:42","date_gmt":"2016-03-03T02:53:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/angelaminelli.com\/blog\/?p=11787"},"modified":"2022-08-25T22:24:23","modified_gmt":"2022-08-26T03:24:23","slug":"undeniable-truth-bmi-weight-loss","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/angelaminelli.com\/blog\/undeniable-truth-bmi-weight-loss\/","title":{"rendered":"The Undeniable Truth About BMI and Weight Loss"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n\t<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"BMI\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-11788\" height=\"150\" src=\"http:\/\/angelaminelli.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/BMI-150x150.png\" width=\"150\" \/>When it comes to weight loss, there are many different theories on what works best, one being the relativity of BMI.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\tBMI stands for body mass index, and it&rsquo;s a measure of body fat based on the weight and height of adult men and women.&nbsp; The real question though is, does it matter when it comes to <em>losing <\/em>weight?&nbsp; &nbsp;\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\tObviously, the lower your BMI, the less you weigh, and the healthier you are.&nbsp; Doctors measure it, personal trainers live by it, and it&rsquo;s <strong>an excellent way<\/strong> of knowing your progress as far as numbers go.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\tBut it can&rsquo;t be relied on solely when it comes to weight loss.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\tWeight is a complex issue, one that involves a lot of little pieces that can&rsquo;t so easily be measured and accounted for, such as how your weight makes you feel, how you&rsquo;d feel if you lost it, or why it&rsquo;s there in the first place. &nbsp;&nbsp;\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\tIt might sound counterintuitive, but fat&nbsp;is highly protective for millions of people, so although you want to lose it consciously, subconsciously, your mind might be stopping you. &nbsp;Think of it like this.&nbsp; As a child, you were scared.&nbsp; Perhaps you grew up in a violent household, or you were cruelly teased a lot, or even abused.&nbsp; Food became your salvation, and <strong>you learned to eat to mask<\/strong> the pain.&nbsp; Pile more pain on top of more pain, and you become overweight from all the overeating.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\tBut the reason you overeat is never resolved, so many years later, as an adult, you&rsquo;re still overeating every time you feel the same kind of pain you did when you were a kid, whether it&rsquo;s the same old pain, or new pain.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\tIn that case, BMI doesn&rsquo;t amount to a hill of beans.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\tThen there&rsquo;s the importance of gut health.&nbsp; How toxic are you?&nbsp; Are you OD&rsquo;ing on sugar every day?&nbsp; Do you have a candida overgrowth?&nbsp; All of these factors play a huge part with weight, which BMI fails takes into consideration.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\tThe biggest problem with modern day approaches to weight loss is that it&rsquo;s too one-sided and neglects to take into account the real issues underlying excess weight, the most important one being stress.&nbsp; Stress drives everything, <strong>from disease to low energy to weight,<\/strong> and not all stress looks alike.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\tYou may be suffering from emotional stress, like a job loss or loss of a loved one, or physical stress, such as a pinched nerve or back problems.&nbsp; You may even have nutritional stressors, in the form of enzyme or vitamin deficiencies.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\tWithout ever correcting any of these issues, you&rsquo;ll constantly struggle with your weight and wonder why it never goes away.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\tBMI does little to help you get control of a lifestyle that&rsquo;s driven by stress and never changes.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\tWithout question, diet, exercise and BMI are important when it comes to weight loss, and shouldn&rsquo;t be ignored.&nbsp; But to rely on them solely&nbsp;will only <strong>set you up for failure<\/strong> and guarantee that you&rsquo;ll gain weight again, making it even harder to lose the next time around, not to mention the emotional impact of weight, which can be devastating in and of itself.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t[bctt tweet=&#8221;Weight loss comes down to what you&#8217;re eating and how stressed you are,&#8221;] regardless of anything else, despite your age, despite genetics,&nbsp;despite all of it!
